Elizabeth Gaffney, 93, died May 12th, 2007, in Overland Park, KS. Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 17th, 2007 at the Porter Funeral Home, 8535 Monrovia, Lenexa, KS where friends may call from 10a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Cremation. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Garden Terrace at Overland Park, 7541 Switzer, Overland Park, KS 66214 or The Alzheimer's Association, Heartland Chapter, 3846 W. 75th Prairie Village, KS 66208-0076. Elizabeth was born September 27, 1913, in Kansas City, KS, and lived in Mission for 63 years before moving to Garden Terrace in 2001. She is predeceased by her husband of 70 years, J.E. "Ted" Gaffney, and her sister and brother-inlaw, Clydean and Les Johanson. After a brief career as a beautician, Elizabeth began her "real" career as a nurturer, devoting loving attention to family and friends. Her kind and gentle attitude spoke volumes, as did the meals she made for her friends and neighbors on Maple Ave. during times of joy or crisis. Elizabeth's positive and friendly spirit guided the way she lived. As she and Ted often said, "We've had a wonderful life." Elizabeth is lovingly remembered by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Fred McGowan, their children, Patrick, Keith, and Heather, of Raleigh, NC; sons and daughters-in-law, Dennis and Judy Gaffney, their sons Mike and Tim of Overland Park and Basehor; and Terry and Kathy Gaffney of Peoria, AZ, their children Coleen and Trevor; 11 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. She is also survived by her brother, Keith Johnson, niece Janis Haydon and nephew Neil Johanson. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Garden Terrace for the outstanding care and love they gave our Mother. We deeply appreciate her devoted friend, Julie Caffrey. Additional thanks go to Janis Haydon and Nancy Davis for their attentive kindness through the years. (Condolences may be expressed at: www.porterfuneralhome.com. The town site of Piqua began with the coming of the St. Louis, Ft. Scott, and Wichita Western Railway. "Piqua" received it's name from the superintendent of construction of the Railroad, he being from the County of "Pickway," Ohio. The early settlers of the Piqua community came from the most part, from the states of Illinois, Pennsylvania, Indiana, and Missouri. Piqua at one time had a hardware store, general store, Blacksmith shop, 2 hotels, a grist mill, bank, restaurant, furniture store, 2 churches, and a coffin maker. The St. Martin Catholic Church and steeple are both historic landmarks. Built in 1884, the church as beckoned travelers for over 100 years.

Piqua is a village in Neosho Falls Township at the crossing of the St. Louis, Fort Scott & Wichita and the Missouri Pacific Railways. It is in a sort the successor of Bramlette, a station about a mile below, which was abandoned by the railway after the building of the new east and west road. The main street of the village is upon a half section line, the land upon the north being owned by George A. Bowlus, of Iola, and that on the south by P. C. T. Buck who used it for farming purposes. The town started in the spring of 1882, the store of J. W. Kesterson being the first building. Next came the blacksmith shop of John Kipp, and third the residence of Dr. J. Beekman. Street & McClure soon afterward erected a store building, which burned November 8, 1882. A schoolhouse was erected in 1882 at a cost of $1,000, and has an attendance of sixteen. It is taught by Miss Nannie Stewart. The Methodists have recently organized a society, with twenty members, at this point, and completed a church edifice in December, 1882. Services are held by the pastor of the church at Neosho Falls. A post office was established in the spring of 1882, and M. Street appointed Postmaster. The town now has one store, one school, one church, one lumber yard and a dozen residences. A hotel building is in the process of erection.
In the fall of 1881, the only cross-country railway that ever became a reality in Woodson County made a proposition for the subscription of bonds to its stock. This road, the St. Louis, Fort Scott & Wichita, asked $28,000 of Center and $22,000 of Toronto Township. The measure met with comparatively little opposition in either place and passed by 124 to 71 in Center and 64 to 14 in Toronto. Work was at once begun on the road. On the 1st of January, 1883, this road was completed to El Dorado, Butler county, Kan., 133 miles west of Fort Scott.

"John Gaffney, division roadmaster of the Missouri Pacific, is dead. A special train was tendered by the missouri pacific for the funeral party, which left Eldorado for Piqua, Kan."
'Butler County Democrat' Thursday August 28, 1890, Vol. VIII Old Series, New Series Vol. 1 No. 42
"Died in El Dorado on August 24 h. John Gaffney aged 54 years. The deceased has not been well since he had the grippe last winter, but has been able to be around until very recently. He was taken sick and never recovered. Mr. Gaffney has been road master on the Fort Scott & Wichita road ever since it was built, and was very popular with officials and employees of the road. He leaves five children the youngest being eight years of age. His remains were taken to Woodson County where they were laid to rest by the side of his wife who died about five years ago."
'The Repubican', Butler County, August 29, 1890
"Died John Gaffney
Sunday morning John Gaffney division road master of the Missouri Pacific, died at his home after a short illness. The deceased was one of the best know railroad men tin southern Kansas and wherever his name was spoken it was with a respect for the sterling qualities of integrity which Gaffney possessed.
The deceased was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1836 and was taken by his parents to Illinois when a child.
In 1881 he began work for the St. Louis, Fort Scott and Wichita rail road, and laid the first track for that company.
He was afterwards make general road master of the road and when that office was abolished he was given the poisition of division road master, which place he held until his death. He was esteemed very highly by the officials of the road, and when his death was feared Father Dooley, of the Catholic church was given a special train to hasten to his bedside. Another special was given to the funeral party that accompanied his remains to their last resting place at Piqua where Mrs. Gaffney was buried five years ago. Two daughters and five sons remain with his many friends to mourn his loss."

I see no entries for Mary or Margaret......the years 1830
through 1834 are missing in the Kilronan Church records.
The records start around 1824 so I would have no record of Michael Digan and
Katherine Spellman's marriage entry.
The Tithe record ( Around 1835) does show A Michael Duignan...the other
Crosshill names are:
John Duignan
Owen Gaffney sr
Owen Gaffney jr
James Gaffney
John Gallagher
Owen Peter Guihen
Pat Mc Manus
Darby Mc Manus
Mary McManus
Roger Mc Manus
Loughlin Mc Manus
? Shorket and partners
Some of the early birth records show that a number of Gaffneys and Duignans
married----for ExampleJames Gaffney and Maria Duignan had Catherine
11/13/1835, Mary 8/9/1837 and John 9/16/1842......Other births were recorded
for these couples--- Patrick Duignan married to Brigida Gaffney, Thomas
Duignan to Margaret Gaffney, Michael Gaffney married to Maria Duignan and
Michael Spelman to Anna Gaffney. The early birth entries do not list the
townlands so I cannot say where any of the parents above lived.
That is all I found for you.....I hope it helps a bit.
Good Luck....Ann

Some records compiled through correspondence by Maude Annie Motter Gaffney (1879-1958) are unverified.
This letter was written by Jay S. Motter, Dayton, Indiana; dated Aug. 11, 1938 descendant of Jacob son of Andrew Matter/ Motter.
"Andrew Motter, his father of German extraction, came to America about 1796 accompanied by his wife and seven children and settled in Fairfax County, Virginia, where he a man of considerable wealth and distinction, bought a large tract of land. He was noted for his old-fashioned hospitality and for his love of hunting and sport. After a few years he moved to the vicinity of Hagerstown, MD and later to Chillicothe, Ohio. His last days were spent in Carroll County, Indiana, with some of his children, where his death took place he having been about eighty-four years old. His wife, Elizabeth, born in Germany, June 17, 1772 died about 1855 at the home of her son David in Wisconsin. "------------SHORT STORY OF ANDREW MOTTER
Andrew was born, according to the 1840 census, between 1771 and 1779. It has not been established as to where. Andrew told his son David that the Motter family descended from four brothers that came to America at the same time. He also passed down the story of how this small Motter family crossed over the Rhine and traveled through Switzerland and then finally to America.
Andrew's youth is still a mystery but from family records we know that he spelled his surname MATTER until 1840 and that he married Elizabeth Bauer about 1790. They had a total of ten children and nine were recorded as sons. So far three of the sons, according to their descendants, were born in Virginia. From Virginia he moved near Hagerstown, MD where another Matter/Motter line is recorded. Andrew moved his family to Chillicothe, Ohio (date not recorded) and then by 1816 he is found on the land taxes of Deer Creek Twp., Pickaway County, Ohio.
Andrew was a tailor by trade and according to his son Jacob, "he loved hunting and sport." He was noted for his old-fashioned hospitality. He was also active in his community. In Deer Creek, he was recorded as a Constable and as a Travis Juror. He and Elizabeth were also recorded as members as early as 1825 of the Methodist Episcopal Church in New Holland, Ohio.
While he lived in Deer Creek, he built a log cabin. This cabin had to have been fairly large because in 1836 Andrew sold this property and it was turned into a hotel by the new owners. He and Elizabeth's final move together was to Democrate Twp., Carroll County, Indiana where he lived next door to his son David. Andrew made David his executor of his estate and besides David, he named only three other sons in his Will. According to family records we know that he had at least nine sons. Andrew died on April 28, 1841 and he left the care of Elizabeth to his son David. At this time, Andrew's obituary and cemetery records have not been found.
THE FOLLOWING ARE DETAILED REPORTS ON THE SOURCES OF THIS STORY...

Searched for Matter/Mattern/Motter immigrants from 1729 to 1807 and there was no Andrew or Elizabeth listed. There was a group of Matters that arrived on 16 Sept. 1751on the ship Edinburgh: Hans Adtam Matter, Georg Matter, Jacob Matter, Hans Matter. Valtin (Valentine) Matter and his brother George arrived on the ship Brothers. On 7 Oct 1751, a Diewalt Matter arrived on the ship Janet. Only the MEN were recorded on the passenger list. Their wives and children were not recorded. Han Adtam (aka John Adam Mattern) had his family with him: wife Maria Magdalena Quirin and four children. One child was named Andreas Matter born 29 Feb 1748 in Ingwiller, Alsace, France. To my knowledge no one has researched this Andreas. (Our family records from DAVID, SR.'s descendants state that our MOTTER line originated from four brothers who came to America.)
**There has been considerable research on these four MATTER men by the Matter/Motter Researchers back to the early 1600's in Alsace Lorraine, Germany-France. What's interesting about this line is that the children of John Adam Mattern all lived near Hagerstown, Washington Co., MD then later moved on to Franklin Twp., Huntingdon, PA. One Mattern named John, born 1778 near Hagerstown, MD married Nancy Tipton and they moved to Archer Twp., Harrison Co., OH. In my research of Pickaway, there was a Dr. T. C. Tipton listed as a resident in "The History of Franklin and Pickaway Counties, Ohio" and a THOMAS TIPTON in the 1810 Federal census of Pickaway County, OH. Unfortunately, the Matter/Motter Researchers have no information on our Andrew.

Valentine MOTTER and Henry BAUER witnessed the naturalization of John Grisman Pope of Frederick Co., MD on 10 Apr. 1762 in Annapolis. Valentine is recorded as early as 20 Jan 1760 when he bought Lot 86 in Sharpsburgh from Joseph Chapline for one shilling; on 22 Oct he bought Lot 55 from Chapline for 2.10 pounds. Valentine settled in Middletown Valley, MD. Valentine continued to purchase property until he had acquired about 1700 acres on both sides of the main road from Middletown to Frederick, including much of what is now called Fountaindale.
NOTE: I am not sure, at this time, how Valentine connects into our line but he is recorded with the BAUER surname.

Andrew and wife stated, on the 1840 census, that they were both older than 60 but less than 70 years old. That makes their birth between the years 1771 and 1779.
SOURCE: David, Jr., grandson of Andrew, gave the following information to his descendants:
David told his descendants that his ancestors crossed over the Rhine River and traveled through Germany and Switzerland to come to America and that they took their family name from the Matterhorn in Switzerland.
NOTE: I wasn't sure about this story until I started searching the census records and sure enough on the 1800 and 1810 census in Pennsylvania there was a large family that gave their name as MATHORN. By the 1820 census, the same family members gave their name as MATTERN/MATTER. By the 1840 and 1850 census some had changed their name to MOTTER/MOTTERN. According to the Genealogies by the Library of Congress since 1986 Section II the MATHORN, MATTER, MATTERN, MOTTER, MOTTERN families are also identified with the MATTERHORN surname.

Andrew Motter and wife were early members of the Methodist Episcopal Church of New Holland which was organized as early as the year 1825. No early records could be found for this church but Andrew Motter and wife were listed as members of the first class of twelve under the leadership of Samuel Hosselton. Jonathan Motter and wife were members of the Cedar Grove Methodist Episcopal Church."
SOURCE: The Descendants of Jonathan & Elizabeth Holloway Motter of Pickaway County, Ohio, by Leslie Smith Powell.
Leslie did an excellent study on the Motters of Pickaway County. In her research, she stated that from 1816 to 1820 she found the marriage records of three Motter's: William and Ari (Short) Motter, George and Mary "Polly" (Knowles) Motter, and Jonathan and Elizabeth (Holloway) Motter. Marriages were listed in the Early Ohio Marriages--Ross County.
Our David was born in VA and so was his brother George and as for Jonathan one son said he was born in VA and the other said PA. While researching our line in Virginia, Leslie records the following: Vol. 8 Virginia State Papers published in Williamsburg 12 Mar 1776, page 119 states: " Mr. George Mater and Lieutenant Denny are appointed to examine the several Ship materials offered for sale by Major Travis at Jamestown, and report to committee whether they are good of the kind and in their opinion worth the money he asks for them."
In our letter co-respondence of 1995-96, Leslie informed me that she feels that the Motters of Pickaway county, OH are all related and very probably brothers but has been unable to find the records. At the writing of her book she did not have all the information on Andrew or his son David. We both agree that the sons of Andrew need to be researched to find the immigration pattern of this family and the order of birth of each child. There is a very good possibility that Andrew, like his son David, used the old European naming pattern. Based on her research of this family she feels that future research should be concentrated in Frederick Co., Maryland, York Co., PA, Richmond and Williamsburg, VA.

* Andrew purchased Section 5 in the Democrat Township of Carroll Co., Indiana on Sept 27, 1836
* Andrew lived next to son David who moved there in 1829 in Section 7. David was the second white man to settle this area.
* Will of Andrew filed in April 1841; No obituary or cemetery record could be found; Son David was the administrator of the will. Andrew did not mention his wife in the Will but he did list the following children: DAVID, JACOB, GEORGE J., and SAMUEL C. MOTTER. He also left some of his personal items to W. Compton and Caleb Compton. (David's son Andrew married Elizabeth Compton)
SOURCE: Carroll County Historical Society Museum
When I requested information on Motters in Carroll County, the Historical Society included the information on ZACHARIAH MOTTER who married Hannah Bridge in Carroll County on 12 Sep 1872 (Book 6 pg 407). He was listed as a Civil War Veteran. He died 5 Mar 1882 at the age of 41-9mo-16 days and was buried in Deer Creek United Brethren Cem., Carroll Co., IN. His wife Hannah died 8 Aug 1903 at the age of 61 years and was buried in Deer Creek U. B. Cemetery. I believe that ZACHARIAH was the son of Frederick and Mary Motter. Frederick was on the 1850 Federal Census of Miami County, OH stating that he was born in PA in 1805 and listed six children on the census and one was Zachariah born 1840. There is a very good possibility that this family is related to our Motters. "

Stated that "Elizabeth died about 1855 at the home of her son David in Wisconsin.
" David purchased land in Richland County in 1852 and he passed away in 1854.
I checked cemeteries and could not find her BUT in the Chitwood Cemetery there
was several head stones next to Ustatia Motter that was unreadable.
Elizabeth was not on the 1855 census. She probably passed away before David since
she was not mentioned in his will. "

Kansas Pioneer Dead
Elbridge Johnson Became the Victim of Bright's Disease at Early Hour This Morning.
Elbridge Johnson, a Kansas pioneer and the several years a resident of Kansas City, Kansas, died this morning at 2 o'clock of Bright's disease at his home, 1800 North Thirteenth street. He was a contractor and builder, but ill health forced his retirement from business more than a year ago. He underwent a very serious operation last March, and seemingly had recovered the effects, when Bright's disease developed.
Mr. Johnson was a native of New York, having been born at East Davenport, N. Y., October 1, 1840. At the age of 15 years he removed with his parents to Galesburg, Ill. Five years later he removed to Centrala, Ill., and came to Kansas in the early '60's, settling in Franklin county, later moving to Linn and Anderson counties.
He was married September 17, 1863, at Centralia, Ill., to Miss Hester E. Timmons, who survives him. Twelve children were born of the union, of whom seven are still living.
Mr. Johnson joined the Methodist Episcopal church when 15 years of age, and led an exemplary Christian life, dying an active member of the London Heights M. E. church. His funeral will be held from that church at 2 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon. The service will be conducted by the pastor, Rev. John Endaca?? Interment will be in Mr. Hope. Obituary: 30 Jan 1906

"In his will he mentions the fact of his "being about to to into his Majesty's service in the Expedition formed against Crown Point." In a return of Capt. William Peabody's company, in Col. Plaisted's regiment, dated Aug. 13, 1756 is the name of Ebenezer Johnson, age 45, born in Woburn: residence, Woburn; enlisted, Salem: Col. Fowle's company and regiment; reported sick. His age is evidently understated. In a muster roll of Capt. William Peabody's company, Crown Point Expedition, 1756 ( Mass. Arch., vol, 95, p.100), Ebenezer Johnson, residence Woburn, time of service, Apr. 22 to Nov. 3, 28 weeks, is reported dead. He died, therefore, about Nov. 3 1756."

From:"Frederick (Old Fed) Grider and His Twenty Two Children"by Marilyn Neathery
McCluen, P.O. Box 165, Rockwood, TN 37854, p.526
"When your researchers began working seriously to find information about each of the children born to Frederick (old Fed) Grider and his first and second wives, no one was found who remembered ever hear~ing anything about what had happened to the son Samuel born to old Fed and his second wife. Certainly they had a son named Samuel for his name was listed as being one of their children on the Grider family record. Lois Grider Black, in searching for Griders any place she could find them in the United States, found a Samuel Grider in Carroll County, Missouri, census. By this census, he was born 1812 in Kentucky! This was the beginning of research that made it possible to locate this lost child. Hurriedly done research showed that Samuel Grider in Carroll County, MO records from 1833 through 1880.
Eva Burchett Conner made two trips to Ray, Howard and Carroll Counties, Missouri, searched the public records there and had personal interviews with Leamon Grider, a direct descendant of Samuel Grider, and other of the Grider kinfolk. All of this proved, without doubt, that the missing son had been found.
Eva also found that, before he migrated to Missouri, Samuel Grider had married Ann Campbell in Cumberland County. KY. Ann was the daughter of Roger Campbell and his wife Mary. Roger Campbell and other members of his family went to Missouri at the same time Samuel Grider moved there. The Roger Campbell family lived in Howard County, MO for three years before moving on to Carroll County where they settled at Miles Point, a steamboat landing on the Missouri River. Descendants of Samuel Grider still farm these Missouri River bottoms in Carroll County, MO.
Eva also found another one of the missing children born to old Fed Grider and his second wife, Elizabeth. records of Carroll County show that Samuel Grider served as administrator of the estate of his "BROTHER FREDERICK" who had died before 1841. There is absolutely no doubt that his "brother Frederick" was the son called "Allen" by the family and shown that way on the family records and that his full name was Frederick Allen Grider."

A James R. Anderton served in Company H, 101st Illinois Infantry
William Thomas Luttrell, Excerpted from "Our Community's Role In The War Between The States",
by Mrs. Guy Martin, published Oct. 5, 1962
by The Waverly Journal, Waverly, Illinois
"William Thomas Luttrell, grandson of this Morgan County pioneer, grew up among the hardy surroundings of pioneer days and developed a strong constitution. When the Civil War came on it is related in family annals that he returned home one day and said in substance: "Mother, I love you dearly and my gray headed old father, but my country calls and I must go." On August 9, 1862 he enlisted as a corporal in Co. H, 101st Illinois Infantry, formed at Franklin, and started to the front under Captain Joab M. Fanning.
While the regiment was training at Cairo he was elected second lieutenant of his company and later promoted to first lieut. During the war he was in many bloody engagements, and always conducted himself as a brave and gallant soldier.
He was among those who had the honor of running blockade at Vicksburg, being assigned to the gunboat, Lafayette. While doing service on it as a sharpshooter in an engagement with Confederate batteries below th city he was slightly wounded by a flying splinter caused by a shell which had exploded near him."
101st Illinois Infantry
Regiment History
"Early in March the Battalion was ordered down to Vicksburg, where it was broken up, and the companies assigned to various independent duties. Company K was assigned to provost duty at General Grant's Headquarters; Company A was assigned to the "General Bragg"; Company G to the ram "Switzerland"; Company D to the "Rattler" and the "Crocket"; and Company H to the "Lafayette".
From this, until the final reunion of the Regiment, each company had its separate history of scouts, skirmishes and expeditions, up an down the Mississippi and its tributary streams. Company G had the honor of running the blockade at Vicksburg, for which service, after the fall, General Grant furloughed the entire company.
On the 7th of June the other part of the Regiment was exchanged, and sent down to New Madrid, Mo. July 11 they were sent to Columbus, Ky., whence they were started out on a series of scouts and expeditions, which only terminated, about the 25th of August, by their bringing up at Union City, Tenn. Here they remained about a month, during which time Companies A, D, G, H and K rejoined them, and completed the reunion of the Regiment, which remained a unit thenceforth.
September 24, 1863, the Regiment received orders transferring it to the Department of the Cumberland,"

BIOGRAPHY - The Stroops Family by Anne Marie
Thomas Jefferson Stroops and Nancy Addie Mace were married on September 18, 1871. Addie was the daughter of Joseph and Nancy Mace, who are buried in the Astoria Cemetery, Fulton County, Illinois.
Nancy Addie Mace Stroops had a brother Aurelius Mace and sisters, Martha and Maggie.
Tom and Addie Stroops were the parents of three children: Everett, (no farther record), Cornelius Edgar, who married Ara Himmel. Ara was the daughter of Peter M. and Susan Burgard Himmel. "Neil" and Ara had 5 children: Ethel, Earl, twins Olive and Orb; and Myrtle. They and their family moved to Hastings, Adams County, Nebraska from a Browning Township farm in the Mr. Zion neighborhood. Both "Neil" and Ara are buried at Inland, Clay County, Nebraska.
Cora Belle Stroops was married to Amos S. Stambaugh on Nov. 8, 1896 and she and Amos were the parents of 6 children: Violet, Kenneth, Dollie, Velma, Woodrow and Addie. Cora Belle lived with her family in Browning Township on a farm 2 miles west of Bader.
Tom Stroops was a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge in Astoria. He seemed to have a lot of different interests including real estate holdings in both Schuyler and Fulton Counties, as well as business interests in the state of Kansas, somehow connected with his brother-in-law, "Real" Mace.
Addie Stroops passed away in 1914 and in some of the 7 years following her death Tom would spend his winters in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, and then come back to Illinois for the rest of the year. He spent his time in Illinois with his daughter and her family and it was during this period that he added two rooms (a living room and bedroom) onto the residence of his daughter's home, Amos S. and Cora B. Stambaugh, in order that he might have a place to come to when he was in Illinois. They had 6 children by this time and the small house they had built back about 1900 seemed even smaller by now.
Thomas J. Stroops passed away in 1921 at the age of 70 in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, California, and both Thomas Jefferson and Addie Mace Stroops are buried in the Astoria Cemetery.

"He attained to high civic office, was one of the magistrates or assistants of the Colony, and a military officer of the several ranks from ensign to major. He resisted, at the risk of imprisonment, the spirit of royal aggression the the days of Andros. he commanded, until superseded by an officer deputed by the government, a detachment of about 300 men, assembled in arms at Billerica, on the night of Aug. 23, 1695, because of the killing or capture of fifteen persons by the Indians at that place. A thorough search of tahe country to the northward by this detachment, with William Johnson as second in command, failed to discover the enemy anywhere in force, and the men who had assembled from Woburn and its neighboring towns were dismissed."
(III) Major William Johnson, son of Captain Edward Johnson (2), was born in Canterbury, Kent, England, Kent, England, in 1629, and baptized March 22, 1629, married May 16, 1655, Esther Wiswall, daughter of Elder Thomas Wiswall, of Dorchester and Newton. She died December 27, 1707. He attained high civic offices; was assistant to the colony; major in the military forces of the colony and during the days of Governor Andros was one of those who resisted the aggressive acts curtailing the liberty hitherto enjoyed by the colonists, and commanded, until superseded by an officer deputed by the government, a detachment of about three hundred men, assembled in arms at Billerica, August 23, 1695, because of the killing or capture of fifteen persons at that place by hostile Indians. As second in command he accompanied the troops in a search for the enemy, but the Indians made good their escape. He was the second town clerk and held many town offices. He died May 22, 1704, in Woburn. His will was dated May 10, 1695, and proved September 11, 1704 (http://www.yeoldewoburn.com/Johnson.htm)

Born in 1599, and before emigrating to New England, resided at Herne Hill, near Canterbury, Kent, England County of Kent, England. His will indicates that he was of a comfortable estate consisting of a farm and two other pieces of property. On embarking from England with his family he is classed as a joiner. This may have been in part an evasion, as no one above the rank of mechanic or serving man was allowed to leave without special permission. As several of his sons and grandsons were shipwrights and carpenters, it is not improbable that he carried on the business of shipbuilding at Herne Bay. However, he did not engage in any mechanical occupation after his arrival in new England.
Early in April, 1630, Captain Johnson, without his family, embarked in one of the ships of the fleet which brought Governor Winthrop and his company to Massachusetts Bay. The records show him trading on the Merrimac River, and it is probable that he came for traffic and adventure and that he returned to England in the summer of 1631.
He returned with his family, in 1636, a zealous Puritan and in full sympathy with the religious system of the Massachusetts Colony. His ruling motive was no longer business or pleasure but in building up a Puritan Commonwealth in this western world. Embarking this time at Sandwich, the nearest seaport at which there was foreign trade, he settled temporarily at Charleston. From that time to the day of his death the records of Charlestown of Woburn, and of the Colony are filled with his name and deeds.
He was one of the committee of the Charlestown church "for the erecting of a church and town" at Woburn and was the first Recorder (Town Clerk). He was generally known as the father of the town. May 10, 1643, he took his seat in the General Court as deputy from the town of Woburn, the first session of the court after the incorporation of the town. For thirty years he was not only town clerk and representative in the general court, but he usually was Chairman of the Selectmen and occupied some prominent place on commissions and committees, especially legal and military committees.
Captain Johnson had evidently given considerable attention to military matters in England, and there acquired the rank by which he has since been known. Soon after his second arrival, we find his name in the Charlestown records with the prefix of Captain, a title of honor which in those days was not given at random. On becoming a deputy to the General Court, he was placed on nearly every military committee. These were entrusted with most extraordinary powers such as inspecting fortifications, levying fines, collecting arrearages, etc. He gathered and drilled 3 squad of militia at Woburn soon after its settlement, and always held a command in the militia of the Colony. He was often sent out on expeditions to treat with or overawe the Indians and to deal with troublesome neighbors. His name scarcely ever appears in the Massachusetts records without his military title.
For more than two hundred years, tradition has ascribed to him the authorship of Wonder-Working Providence, a quaint and authentic narrative of events connected with the settlement of Massachusetts Bay. It is acknowledged to be the most important book on the Massachusetts colony that was printed during the first hundred years after the settlement. The fraudulent use made of this work in the collection known as the Gorges Tracts for a time robbed the author of the credit due him, but the true authorship has beyond a doubt been established by Dr. Poole, the famous librarian.
Captain Edward Johnson married Susan Munter who was born in England in 1597 and who died at Woburn in 1690. He died in Woburn April 23, 1672, aged 73 years. At the session of the court following (may 15th) it was ordered that a committee be appointed to gather and preserve such historical material as had been collected by him, John Winthrop, Sr., and others.

Edward Johnson is mentioned in the book "Albion's Seed", by David H. Fischer as the author of Johnson's Wonder-working Providence 1628-1651" .
The author says Johnson probably emigrated aboard the ship ARBELLA with Governor Winthrop, the first ship of 198 in the Puritan migration from England. (The migration lasted until 1640, then stopped abruptly).
"Arbella was no ordinary emigrant vessel. She carried 28 great guns and was the "admiral" or flagship of an entire fleet of English ships that sailed for Mass. in the same year (1630). The men and women embarked in her were also far from being ordinary passengers. Traveling in the comfort of a cabin was Lady Arbella Fiennes, sister of the Earl of Lincoln in whose honor the ship had received her name. Also on board were her husband, Isaac Johnson, a rich land owner in the County of Rutland; her brother Charles Fiennes; and her friend, the future poet, Anne Dudley Bradstreet, who had grown up in the household of the Earl of Lincoln. Other berths were occupied by the Earl's stewards Simon Bradstreet and Thomas Dudley; by an English gentleman called Richard Saltonstall; and by a Suffolk lawyer named John Winthrop, who was destined to become the leader of the Colony.
Most of the Arbella's passengers were families of lesser rank, but very few of them came from the bottom of English society. Their dress and demeanor marked them as yeoman and artisans of middling status"
"The Arbella was one of seventeen vessels that sailed to Mass in the year 1630.
Edward Francis Johnson, who wrote a sketch of this family, says: "The conjecture which I formed regarding these (dates of baptisms and burials extending back to 1545 in St. George's register) was that 'William Johnson, parrish clarke' was the father of the town clerk of Woburn, and that he occasionally put in a back item into the records when he came to have charge of them; that he was born in 1559; that perhaps the John Johnson who died in 1598 was his father, born perhaps in 1541 or 1542; that the William Johnson who died in 1576, was his grandfather, 'husband of Elizabeth,' who died in 1575."

According to "Genealogy and Memoirs of Isaac Stearns and His Descendants, " by Mrs. Avis Stearns Van Wagenen, 1901. 3 brothers, Isaac, Daniel, and Shubael came from England together. Daniel died without being married, then Shubael & wife died, leaving 2 sons, Chas and Nathanel. Chas and Nathaniel went to care of uncle Isaac. OR Isaac, Charles, and Nathaniel were brothers and came to America together. Book also indicates Stearns, Sternes, Sterns, Starns are all variations of Sterne.

From "Fifty Great Migration Colonists to New England & their Origins," by John Brooks Threlfall. Madison Wisconsin 1990:
Isaac Stearns probably came to New England in the Winthrop Fleet. On the morning of April 8 1630, the first five ships set sail from Yarmouth, Isle of Wight, and arrived at Salem on the 12th of June. The other six ships of the Winthrop Fleet sailed in May and arrived in July, bringing altogether about 700 passengers. Not being satisfied with the prospects of Salem, the colonists soon moved on to Charlestown and thence to Watertown where they settled. Isaac Stearns settled near Mount Auburn. In 1642, his home lot was bounded on the north by the land of John Warren, on the west by the highway, on the south by the land of John Biscoe, and on the east by Paquette Meadow, a part of which meadow he owned. In the distribution of the estate of his son Samuel in 1724, this home lot "where his grandfather had lived", was assigned to the eldest son Nathaniel. Probably all the families of the name Stearns in the United States are descended from three early immigrants, viz. Isaac or Charles who settled in Watertown, or Nathaniel, who settled in Dedham. Isaac in his will, calls Charles "my kinsman". Probably Nathaniel was also related.
Isaac Stearns was admitted a freeman on May 18, 1631, and he was a selectman for several years.
On Dec. 4, 1638, Isaac Stearns and John Page were fined 5 Shillings "for turning the way about" (i.e. changing the highway). In 1647, he and Briscoe were appointed by the selectmen "to consider how the bridge over the river shall be built, and to agree with the workmen for doing it, according to their best discretion." This was the first mention of a bridge over the Charles River in Watertown.
Isaac Stearns died June 19, 1671, leaving a widow Mary, who died April 23, 1677.
His will, dated five days before his death, and with his autograph signature, is extant in the Middlesex Probate office.
From Bonds "History of Watertown":
Isaac came to America, in 1630, in the same ship, as there is reason to believe, with Gov. Winthrop, and Sir Richard Saltonstall

The saga of Daniel Brainerd, the first of the family to come to America, is a somewhat romantic and rather touching one. It is said that his name, originally, was Brainwood--if I correctly decipher our genealogist's tidy but not-all-that-legible script. He was stolen from his native town of Braintree, Essex, England, when he was about eight years old and brought to America. He was sold to a Mr. Wadsworth, farmer, for his passage: "To be learned to read and write and at time of his freedom when twenty-one years old to be given two suits of clothes." It is difficult to See what advantage was gained from all this business by whoever it was that "stole" young Daniel if all he got for the boy was the recovery of the expense of passage. Farmer Wadsworth, of course, got thirteen years of service from the lad; and the boy himself seems not to have done too badly, besides getting an education of sorts and two suits of clothes, He went to Haddam, Middlesex County,Connecticut, about 1662, having by then completed his service to Wadsworth. He was born in 1641; so he was, by now, twenty-one. He became a merchant in Haddam and built a store of logs. He became a Deacon of the Church, a Commissioner in 1669, and a Deputy to the General Court.

^Daniel was married to two Hannah Spencer's. 1st, Abt 1664, the daughter of
Gerard Spencer (Ensign) (1614-1685) and 3rd, 29 Nov 1698, the daughter of
Thomas Spencer (Sargent) (1607-1687) and his 2nd wife, Sarah Bearding. Daniel's
2nd marriage, 30 Mar 1693, was to Elizabeth (Wakeman) Arnold.
