Irvin R. Neudeck

IRVIN R. NEUDECK. - At this juncture in a volume devoted to the careers of representative citizens of Wyandotte county, Kansas, it is a pleasure to insert a brief history of Irvin R. Neudeck, who has ever been on the alert to forward all measures and enterprises projected for the general welfare and who is a prominent and influential business man at Kansas City, Kansas. He conducts a large concern which is interested mainly in real estate and loans and he is also manufacturer of the Fay Fern Food, which is well known throughout the United States as a stimulant in connection with the growth of ferns and plants.

A native of the fine old Sunflower state of the Union, Mr. Neudeck was born at Fairmount, in Leavenworth county, on the 2nd of October, 1877. He is a son of Leopold and Theresa (Eckel) Neudeck, the former of whom was born in the Great Empire of Germany, in October, 1836, and the latter of whom claims the state of Pennsylvania as the place of her nativity, her birth having occurred September 19, 1839. Of the eleven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Leopold Neudeck the subject of this review was the eighth in order of birth. The father immigrated to America when a youth but eleven years of age and he located in Wisconsin, where he engaged in the lumber business and whence he later removed to Indiana, settling in the vicinity of Cedar Lake, where he turned his attention to farming. About the year 1866 he came to Kansas, locating in Fairmount township, Leavenworth county, and there was identified with farming and the raising of high grade stock up to 1895, in which year he disposed of his splendid estate of six hundred and forty acres and came to Kansas City, Kansas, where he invested his money in city property. He has lived virtually retired from active participation in business affairs since 1895, but is recognized as one of the most extensive real estate holders in this city. In politics he accords a stanch allegiance to the cause of the Republican party and in his religious faith he is a devout member of the German Methodist Episcopal church.

Irvin R. Neudeck was enrolled as a student in the district schools of Fairmont township, Leavenworth county, until he had reached the age of fifteen years, after which time he pursued his studies in the Kansas City schools. His first work was in the grocery store of his uncle, Henry Horstman, with whom he remained from the 23rd of January, 1896, until 1898. In the latter year he entered the employ of Samuel Stewart, who also conducted a grocery store, but on the 1st of September, 1902, he became interested with John M. Sheaff in the real estate and loan business, continuing as a partner of Mr. Sheaff's until the 5th of October, 1909, when he engaged in that line of enterprise on his own account. He has made a specialty of buying and selling property on Minnesota avenue and in connection therewith sold fifty lots during thirteen months. In addition to his real estate business Mr. Neudeck is manufacturer and sole owner of what is known as the Fay Fern Food, which has an extensive trade throughout the United States. Concerning that commodity, for it is a commodity, the following extract is taken from an article which appears in a circular sent out by Mr. Neudeck:

"Ferns, because of their massive foliage, draw the strength from the small quantity of soil surrounding them quicker than most plants, and when the vitality in the pot soil has been exhausted, the fern must necessarily lapse, the fronds droops unnaturally and take on a lack luster appearance, and may be the fern dies altogether.

"Some means must be at hand to give the soil a wearing fertility.

"Fay Fern Food restores or puts back into the soil that which the plant draws out. Its continued use widens and lengthens the fronds and imparts to them a dark green hue of health. When Fay Fern Food gets a firm hold on the soil, the fern fronds assume a crispness which is an indication that the fern is at its best."

In his political proclivities Mr. Neudeck is a stalwart in the ranks of the Republican party and, while he is not an office seeker, he is deeply interested in community affairs and gives generously of his aid and influence in support of all matters affecting the general welfare. He is affiliated with a number of social and fraternal organizations of representative character and religiously he is a devout member of the Methodist Episcopal church. He is known throughout Kansas City as a business man whose methods are strictly on the square and he is everywhere accorded the unqualified regard of his fellow men.

Sedalia Democrat - Sunday - January 4, 1931

Golden Wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Garvin

Fifty years ago today Michael J. Garvin and Miss Annie Gaffney, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Gaffney, were married at 8 o'clock in the evening, at St. Vincent's Catholic Church, the pastor, Rev. Father Graham performing the ceremony.

Today Mr. and Mrs. Garvin, after fifty years of married life, are in the best of health, and happy in having a number of their friends call at their home, 226 East Fifth Street, to congratulate them. They are not having a celebration, but many are taking the opportunity of wishing them many more years of happiness. Monday morning they will attend a high mass to be read for them by Rev. Father Prendergast, at St. Patrick's church.

At the wedding, fifty years ago, the attendants were Mrs. Kate Carroll, of Houston, Tex., then Miss Kate Sullivan, and Timothy Tierney, now deceased. The wedding march was played by Mrs. Mayme Gaffney of Kansas City, formerly Miss Mayme Sullivan.

Mr. Garvin has the distinction of being the only passenger conductor having voluntarily retired from service. He came to Sedalia in 1878 from Horicon, Wis., and engaged in railroad work. He was for many years with the Missouri, Kansas, Texas, and in 1919 voluntarily retired as a passenger conductor.

Mrs. Garvin lived in Sedalia practically all her life. The couple is one of Sedalia's estimable ones, and the news of their golden anniversary will be read with interest and pleasure by their many acquaintances.

Elizabeth St. John, 2nd wife of Rev. Samuel Whiting, came with him to America in May,
1636. She was the sister of Sir Oliver St. John, who was Chief Justice of the Com.
Pleas in Eng. in the time of the Commonwealth. She was a g.g. dau. of Oliver St. John,
Baron of Beauchamp, who upon the coming of his third cousin, Queen Elizabeth, to
the throne, was created Lord St. John of Bletshoe. Through her ancestress Margaret
Beauchamp, grandmother of Henry Seventh, she was descended from Gundred, (fourth
dau. of William the Conqueror,) who m. William De Warren, the first Earl of Surry.
Through her ancestress Joan Plantagenet, b. in 1272, in Palestine, who m. Gilbert
Le Clair, Earl of Gloucester, and her ancestress Matilda of Scotland, wife of Henry I of
England, and niece of Edgar Atheling, she was descended from Alfred the Great and
other Anglo-Saxon kings. And through her ancestress Maud, wife of William the Conqueror,
and dau. of Baldwin the 7th Count of Flanders, she was descended from Lewis the Fair
and Charles the Bald of France, and from Charlemagne, Emperor of the West, and Hildegarde
of Swabia, his wife.

Notes."This claim of royal descent is reproduced from "The Whiting Memorial," and the N.E. His. Gen.
Reg. Reg., XV.,61. Since printing it I have discovered that Lady Elizabeth St. John, 1605-1677,
through whom the whitings claimed royal descent, was not of all the descent claimed for her. She
certainly was the daughter of Sir Oliver St. John, of Keysoe, M.P. d. 1625, but he was the son of Henry
St. John, of Keysoe, Gent., and not of Sir John St. John, as on p. 218 (who was of royal descent), as
is evident from the will of the said Sir Oliver's mother, proved 7 Sept. 1616. As the connection of the
said Henry St. John with the Lords of St. John, of royal blood, has not been found, this claim may be said to rest in abeyance, and I retain it in the hope that it can be satisfactorily remodeled. See further

DEACON GREGORY STONE was born in the parish of Great Bromley, County, Essex, England. He was christened 19 April, 1592 in St. George Church, the youngest of the eleven children of David Stone and his second wife, Ursula. Nothing is known of his early years except that he was educated enough to read and write. This fact alone indicates that his family was well off and of some consequence in the area: few in his class achieved even the rudiments of formal education.

By 1617, Gregory Stone had left the family home and was living in Nayland, Suffolk County. (a parish about eight miles northeast of Great Bromley), where his marriage to Margaret Garrad was registered along with the baptisms of his seven children between 1618 and 1633, Margaret Garrad Stone died in 1626; a year later Gregory married Lydia Cooper who was the mother of the three youngest of his children (Sarah b. 1632-is our ancestor)

That Gregory Stone was deeply committed to the Puritan movement is clearly indicated in the record of his presentation to the Archdeacons of Sudbury for his refusal to kneel at the alter to receive communion. The Puritans demanded that they partake of communion either seated or standing.

It is apparent, too, that he knew and had dealings with Governor Winthrop as he is mentioned in Winthrop's "History of New England."

In the reigns of James I and Charles I, the position of the Puritans was so difficult as to induce some twenty-five thousand of them between 1630 and 1643 to endure the rigors of crossing the ocean and settling in a new and dangerous wilderness. About two thirds of these came from Suffolk, Essex and the neighboring counties; among them were Gregory Stone and his brother, Deacon Simon Stone. Deacon Simon Stone. arrived in the ship "Increase" in the spring of 1635; Gregory also arrived in that same year with his family, but the exact date of his arrival and the name of the ship are unknown.
