Notes."This claim of royal descent is reproduced from "The Whiting Memorial," and the N.E. His. Gen.
Reg. Reg., XV.,61. Since printing it I have discovered that Lady Elizabeth St. John, 1605-1677,
through whom the whitings claimed royal descent, was not of all the descent claimed for her. She
certainly was the daughter of Sir Oliver St. John, of Keysoe, M.P. d. 1625, but he was the son of Henry
St. John, of Keysoe, Gent., and not of Sir John St. John, as on p. 218 (who was of royal descent), as
is evident from the will of the said Sir Oliver's mother, proved 7 Sept. 1616. As the connection of the
said Henry St. John with the Lords of St. John, of royal blood, has not been found, this claim may be said to rest in abeyance, and I retain it in the hope that it can be satisfactorily remodeled. See further

Chronicler. Having inherited the right to Touraine and Chateau-Landon, half of the Angevin
inheritance, from his uncle, Geoffrey Martel I, Fulk went to war against his brother Geoffrey,
captured and imprisoned him in 1066 and took Anjou and Saintonge, Geoffrey's half of the
inheritance, into his domains. The "Chronicle of the Counts of Anjou" tells that his wife
eloped with Philip I of France in 1107. Fulk himself was the initiator of this work in the 1090's,
chronicling his forebears.

Anjou and Maine. In 1120 he went on pilgrimage to the Holy Land. In 1128 a delegation from
Baldwin II, King of Jerusalem, arrived in France, asking Louis VII to choose one of the French
nobility to marry his daughter Melisande and become heir to the throne of Jerusalem. Fulk,
by then a widower, was chosen. He married Melisande in 1129 and succeeded as King of
Jerusalem in 1131. To defend the holy city from the Muslim champion, Zengi, Fulk allied with
the emir of Damascus and the Emperor of Constantinople during the early 1130s. Turkish
raiders took him prisoner in 1137, but then freed him."

Alan Freer did the flowing reasearch on Williams daughters. Found on:
Ancestry.com Boards > Topics > Medieval History > Medieval Genealogy

1) William if Poitiers states
(a) that a daughter of William (unnamed) was betrothed to Herbertm count of Maine;
(b) that a daughter of William (unnamed) was sought for in marriage by two rival claiment kings of Spain who were brothers, one of whom has been reasonably identified as Alphonso IV, later king of Leon; and (c) that a daughter (again unnamed) was at one time betrothed to Harold Godwinson of Wessex.

2) Ordericius Vitalis mentions five daughters of William's whom he names and describes as
(a) Agatha, who was betrothed successively to Harold Godwinson and Alphonso of Spain. She protestedvigorously against going to Spain, and died a virgin, being buried at Bayeux;
(b) Adeliza, who undertook religious vows early in life and lived under the prtection of Roger of Beaumont;
(c) Constance, who married Alan IV of Brittany;
(d) Adela, who married Stephen I, count of Blois (mother of King Stephen); and
(e) Cecily, who became abbess of Holy Trinity, Caen, in Normandy.

3) William of Malmesbury mentions five daughters - Cecily, Constance and Adela as above, and two others unnamed, one of whom was betrothed to Harold Godwinson and the other to Alphonso of Spain.

4) Robert of Torigny mentions four daughters, Cecily, Constance and Adels, and also "Adeliza", who according to him was betrothed to Harold.

5) Domesday Book mentions a daughter of William named Matilda.

Cecily, Constance and Adela are well known from their subsequent careers. It is possible that Agatha and Adeliza are likely to be the same person but I would tend to favour Ordericus's very precise statement. William of Poitiers seems to confirm that one of then was betrothed to Alphonso of Spain but it is doubtful if one was betrothed to both Herbert of Maine and Harold Godwinson. None of these chroniclers mentions Matilda so it might be tempting to dismiss her existance or legitimacy. These is, however a Caen narrative that apparently mentions her in connexion with both her mother and her sister Cecily, thus confirming Doomesday Book. The daughters of William therefore appear to be as follows:-
1) Agatha, betrothed to Harold Godwinson and to Alphonso of Spain (and possibly at one time to Herbert of Maine!). Died a virgin.
2) Adeliza.
3) Cecily, born before 1066, and became abbess of Holy Trinity, Caen. Died 1127.
4) Adela, married, 1080, Stephen I, count of Blois. Died 1137.
5) Constance, married, 1086, Alan IV, count of Brittany. Died 1090.
6) Matilda.

The separate existance of Agatha and Adeliza is not certain and the existance of Matilda has considerable doubts. In passing it seems remarkable that William's wife, Matilda, who was well known to be of a diminutive size, should manage to have six daughters and four sons in a time when childbirth was a extremely risky business!

As a footnote Ordericus also mentions that one of William's daughters was betrothed to Edwin of Mercia (Lord knows which one). Alan Freer
